What is "sparkling water"?

Sparkling water is drinking water that has been infused with carbon dioxide, giving it effervescence and a bubbly texture. Though slightly acidic,sparkling water contains no calories,sugar,caffeine or artificial flavors. It can be naturally carbonated by transporting water through rock formations containing carbon dioxide,or carbonated artificially through mechanical processes that dissolve carbon dioxide into the water under pressure. The effervescence and bubbles from carbonation provide sparkling water with a refreshing crispness and mouthfeel that appeals to many consumers as a low-calorie alternative to sugary beverages. Sparking water is often enhanced with natural fruit flavors to provide variety while still offering the benefits of plain carbonated water.
